A delegation of five young police athletes, along with their coach Mark Scott, had the honor of meeting with Commissioner of Police Mr. Clifton Hicken at his Eve Leary office on Tuesday.

Mr. Hicken, known for his dedication to youth development, welcomed the athletes to express his gratitude and encouragement following their participation in the 51st Carifta Games held in St. George, Grenada from March 30 to April 1, 2024.

Having personally followed the CARIFTA events closely, Commissioner Hicken commended the athletes for their outstanding performance and dedication on the field.

He expressed his hope that these promising young athletes would maintain their positive attitudes and unwavering commitment to training as they prepare to compete at the international level, aiming to uphold Guyana’s successful track record.

Working closely with his Administrative Team, Commissioner Hicken ensures that every athlete receives the necessary support and resources to excel on the international stage.

Recognizing the power of athletics as a tool for engaging with youth from diverse backgrounds, he emphasizes the importance of promoting sports as a means of fostering safer and more secure communities across Guyana.

Among the accomplished competitors is Tianna Springer, who secured victory in the under-20 400-meter event and earned a spot in the World Under-20 Games with an impressive timing of 52.32.

Additionally, she set a new national record in the 4×400-meter mixed relay, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication.

Jamal Sullivan demonstrated his prowess by reaching the finals in the 800 meters and securing a bronze medal in the 4×400-meter relay. Dhelieson Gill achieved a new national record in the 4x400m mixed relay and advanced to the finals of the under-20 400 meters, earning a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay as well.

Robert Marcus excelled in both the long jump and triple jump events, reaching the finals, while Nathaniel Samaroo showcased his skills in the discus and shot put events, making it to the finals.

Rural Constable Trishel Thompson served as the manager of the Junior CARIFTA Police Team, providing essential support and guidance to the young athletes throughout the competition.

The Commissioner’s commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting sportsmanship among Guyana’s youth continues to inspire and uplift aspiring athletes across the nation.
