Man Fined $25,000 for Assaulting ‘Child Mother’

A 42-year-old man was on Wednesday ordered to pay a fine after admitting to assaulting the mother of his child during a heated dispute.

The defendant, Zafanauth Peters, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The allegation stated that on September 11, at John Street, Georgetown, Peters unlawfully assaulted Tamara Alexander.

In addressing the court, Peters admitted to striking Alexander but claimed he had been provoked.

He said she told him that “no one will ever make a child” for him, comments that enraged him given that he and his current partner have struggled with pregnancy losses.

Peters went on to allege that Alexander practices obeah and has tormented him since their separation, even posting pictures of him and his girlfriend online.

He added that he ended their relationship after she had an affair with his friend.

The prosecutor confirmed that Peters had no prior matters before the court.

After considering his guilty plea, Magistrate Azore fined him $25,000, with a default sentence of one month in prison if the fine is not paid.
