Hope Estate Man Admits to Killing Best Friend

August 4 2025
A 51-year-old man from Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara, recently pleaded guilty to unlawfully killing his best friend during a drunken altercation in 2021.
Sahadeo Persaud, also known as Mohan Robin and “Robin,” appeared before Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif at the Demerara High Court, where he admitted to the lesser charge of manslaughter in the death of 33-year-old Pradesh Ramgobin, also called Avinash.

The incident occurred between September 21 and 22, 2021.
According to court evidence, Persaud and Ramgobin, 33, who shared a close friendship and familial ties, were drinking on Persaud’s veranda when a heated argument broke out.
The dispute escalated inside the home, where Persaud repeatedly struck Ramgobin with a glass bottle, inflicting severe injuries, particularly to the head.
After the attack, Persaud wrapped his friend’s head in an orange jersey, cleaned up the blood using a mop and black jersey, and placed Ramgobin on a bed before going to sleep.
The next morning, Persaud claimed Ramgobin responded when asked if he was okay. However, upon returning from trying to find Ramgobin’s mother, he found him unresponsive and contacted police.
Investigators found blood stains throughout the home and Ramgobin’s body lying on a bed. He was later pronounced dead at the CC Nicholson Hospital.
A post-mortem revealed that Ramgobin died from cerebral haemorrhage caused by multiple blunt force injuries.
Persaud was arrested, gave a caution statement, and was charged with murder on September 27, 2021. He was committed to stand trial in February 2023.
Sentencing was deferred pending a probation report.
State Counsel Darin Chan is presenting the prosecution’s case.
