GDF Seargeant change his mind; now pleaded not guilty

Hours after he pleaded guilty to his involvement in a $58M heist that occurred last week Thursday at Wallison Enterprise at Gordon Street, Kitty, Georgetown, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Sergeant Keyon King moments ago changed his plea to not guilty.

Before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, King, who has 15 years of service in the GDF, explained that he wished to change his plea because he does not have a lawyer.

He further explained that his “head was not clear” at the time he admitted to the crime as this was his first time in court. The Magistrate accepted his new plea and remanded him to jail.

Sergeant King, 32, of Vergenogen, East Bank Essequibo and the business’ two security officers Peon Lee called ‘Nino Brown’, 36, of Eccles, East Bank Demerara and Delroy Jackson called ‘Bug’, 36, of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara were charged with four counts of robbery under-arms.

It is alleged that while being armed with guns and in the company of each other, they robbed Francis Santos Lumes of 60 ounces of raw gold valued at $20 million and $38 million in cash– all totalling $58M.

It is further alleged that the men while being armed with guns, and in the company of each other and others robbed Fernanda Carmicheal of a cell phone worth $350,000.

It is further alleged that the men while being armed with guns, and in the company of each other and others robbed  Francis Santos Lumes of a  gold chain valued at 140,000, a gold ring valued at $60,000, and $14,000 in cash- all totalling $214,000.

And finally, it is alleged that the men while being armed with guns, and in the company of each other and others robbed  William Dasilva of a cell phone valued at $60,000.

Lee and Jackson also pleaded not guilty to the charges. The three robbery accused were remanded to prison until August 24, 2021. Lee and Jackson were represented by lawyers Dexter Todd and Dexter Smartt.
