Lance Corporal Taidell Methand

A 30-year-old soldier is said to be in stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital after being shot on Tuesday night, by unknown assailants, at First Street, Kuru Kururu, Linden-Soesdyke Highway.

According to reports, Taidell Methand, a Lance Corporal in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and a resident of Lot 468 Kuru Kururu, Linden-Soesdyke Highway, was standing at the street corner chatting with some friends, shortly after eight o’clock, when he received a phone call.

Methand walked over to the other side of the street and was conversing on his phone when two unidentified men, both clad in hoodies, approached him. One of the individuals, who was armed with a handgun, pointed the weapon at him and fired at single shot, striking the soldier. Eyewitnesses say Methand ran approximately 60 feet from where the incident occurred and collapsed, while the suspects fled the scene on foot.

The wounded man was rushed to the Medical Unit at GDF’s Timehri Base, where it was determined that he had received a single gunshot wound to the right side of his chest. He was subsequently referred to the Georgetown Hospital, where he is presently a patient.
There have not been any arrests as yet. Investigations are continuing.
