Former cop remanded for young businessman’s murder

On Tuesday, a city magistrate remanded former Police Constable Yoogendra Sukhdeo, of Lot 1896 20th Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD), to prison for the savage murder of his business companion.

He was not obliged to enter a plea in response to the indictable accusation, which stated that he murdered 21-year-old Amit Singh on October 24, 2023, during the course or furtherance of a robbery.

He appeared before Chief Magistrate (ag) Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.

Attorney-at-Law Gordon Gilhuys represented the alleged murderer who was remanded to prison until November 24, 2023.

The case has been assigned for prosecution to Attorney-at-Law Latchmie Rahamat by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack, S.C.

On Tuesday, October 24, Sukhdeo lured his friend and business partner, Singh, a gold trader, to a house on the pretence that he had gold to sell. 

There, he violently murdered and robbed him.

Police detectives discovered Singh’s body wrapped in a sheet at Sukhdeo’s father’s premises at Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, at 14:15 hours on that particular day. 

Following the shocking revelation, Sukhdeo was taken into custody along with three of his workers. 

However, once Sukhdeo was said to have admitted to the crime, police were able to verify the alibis of the other suspects and they were freed.

After killing Singh and covering his body with a sheet, Sukhdeo is said to have informed the police that he locked the house while Singh was inside and fled with the cash Singh was carrying.

Detectives discovered $7,790,000 at Sukhdeo’s house, all of which was made up of $5,000 bills. 

The victim is the son of D. Singh’s Trading’s owner, Vinod Singh, who owns the business at Delph Street and Campbell Avenue in Georgetown
