Facebook Marketplace scams on the rise in Guyana

May 12 2026
A growing number of Guyanese are falling victim to elaborate scams on Facebook Marketplace, where fraudsters are using unbelievably cheap deals to lure unsuspecting buyers into sending money through MMG before disappearing without a trace.
Over the past several months, multiple social media users across Guyana have reported being scammed while attempting to purchase electronics, rent apartments, and secure other services advertised online at prices far below market value.
One of the most common schemes involves smartphones, gaming systems, and other electronics being listed for sale at unusually low prices compared to similar products on the market.
Interested buyers are often told that the seller’s store or pickup location is “currently under construction” or unavailable, and are encouraged to make an MMG payment upfront so the item can be delivered directly to them.
Victims say the scammers appear convincing, often using professionally designed Facebook pages, fake customer reviews, stolen photos, and multiple social media accounts to appear legitimate.
However, once the payment is sent, communication suddenly stops and the buyer is blocked across all related platforms.
A similar tactic is now being widely used in the rental market.
Scammers advertise houses and apartments at prices significantly cheaper than normal rental rates, targeting persons who may be urgently searching for accommodation.
After making contact, victims are told they must pay a small “booking fee” or “viewing deposit” through MMG to secure a spot to see the property because of “high demand.”
Moments after the payment is made, the listing disappears, calls go unanswered, and the victim is blocked.
Many victims admit desperation and the fear of missing out on a “good deal” often clouded their judgment, especially in the current economic climate where affordable housing and electronics are in high demand.
Cybersecurity experts and consumer advocates continue to warn that scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, taking advantage of the speed and convenience of online transactions and mobile money services.
How To Protect Yourself From Facebook Marketplace Scams, Authorities and online safety experts are urging citizens to exercise caution before sending money to anyone online. Here are several important safety tips:
Never send MMG payments before physically seeing and verifying the item or property.
Be cautious of deals that seem far cheaper than normal market prices.
Avoid sellers who refuse in-person meetings or insist on delivery only.
Reverse image search photos to determine whether they were stolen from other pages.
Check how old the Facebook account is and look for suspicious activity or recently created profiles.
Do not allow urgency tactics like “many people are interested” to pressure you into paying quickly.
Meet in public locations whenever possible for transactions involving electronics or expensive items.
For rentals, verify ownership or ask to physically inspect the property before making any payment.
Citizens who believe they have been scammed are encouraged to report the incident to the Guyana Police Force and notify MMG immediately in hopes of tracing suspicious transactions.
As online buying and selling continue to grow in popularity across Guyana, many are now calling for stricter monitoring of fraudulent accounts and greater public awareness to prevent more people from becoming victims of these increasingly common scams.
