Drug Bust: GDF Ranks Arrested with 154 lbs of Marijuana

In a major breakthrough, two ranks from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were apprehended early this morning at approximately 03:45 hours during a police intelligence-led operation.
The operation, a joint effort by the Special Branch and Regional Division 4’B’, resulted in the interception of a vehicle carrying 154 lbs of marijuana.
The vehicle, bearing the registration number DFB 1786 and belonging to the GDF, was stopped along the Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara, near the Prairie Hotel. Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered 22 bulky bags filled with what appeared to be leaves, seeds, and stems of cannabis.
The occupants of the vehicle, a 31-year-old GDF Sergeant from Turkeyen and a 42-year-old GDF Staff Sergeant from Linden, were immediately detained. Both men are stationed at the GDF’s Camp Ayanganna Headquarters.
The sergeant, who was driving, and his companion were informed of the offense of trafficking in narcotics and subsequently cautioned. They were taken to the Regional Police Division 4’B’ Headquarters, where the suspected marijuana was weighed and confirmed to total 154 lbs.
The arrested GDF ranks are currently in police custody as investigations continue into this significant drug bust.
