‘Trini’ gets life sentence for killing Hill Foot farmer
Keino Corbin was on Wednesday sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of being paroled after 11 years and nine months, for the 2016 murder of remigrant Agriculturist, Anthony Breedy. The sentence was imposed by Demerara High Court Judge Jo Ann Barlow.
Initially indicted for the capital offence of murder, Corbin, called ‘Trini’ 25, had earlier appeared in court and pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter.
He admitted to killing Breedy, 60, between March 12 and 14, 2016 at Hill Foot, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Breedy was found dead at around 11:00h on March 14, 2016, at the bottom flat of his home. The pensioner’s hands and feet were bound, and his head was bashed in. Also, a piece of wood suspected to be the murder weapon was found next to him.
A post mortem examination performed on his remains revealed that he died as a result of asphyxia due to manual strangulation compounded by multiple blunt trauma to the head.
A probation report revealed that Corbin, who spent most of his life in Trinidad and Tobago before returning to Guyana in 2015, was described as a quiet person who was skilled at fixing things.
The convict’s neighbours related that he was not well-known in his Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD) community and was associated with persons of “questionable” character.
Meanwhile, prison officials described Corbin as a disciplined and compliant inmate who has taken part in anger management.
The confessed killer, a father of two, in his address to the court, said, “I am begging for another chance to go out into society and show them that I am a changed person. I does always regret what transpired because I’m not that kind of person.”
Breedy’s older brother told the court that his family is still trying to come to grips with the manner in which their loved one was robbed of his life and dreams, just shortly after returning home from Montserrat where he worked up until retirement.
In considering an appropriate sentence for Corbin, Justice Barlow considered the aggravating as well as the circumstances surrounding the killing. While the maximum sentence for felony murder is the death sentence, Justice Barlow said that she would not impose such a sentence because Corbin has shown signs of redemption.
He becomes eligible for parole after serving 11 years, nine months and 20 days. This does not mean that he will be automatically released from prison after this period. He has to first convince parole authorities that he is ready to be reintegrated into society.
Corbin was represented by Attorney-at-Law Ravindra Mohabir, while State Counsel Latifah Elliott appeared on behalf of the prosecution.
Another man, Donell Trapp, called ‘Shortman’, 26, is currently on remand awaiting a re-trial for Breedy’s murder. His first trial, which concluded earlier this month, ended in a hung jury.
