He was released on $700,000 bail after being charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Sargeant was not required to enter a plea to the charge at this stage since the matter is indictable. The case has been adjourned to February 26, 2026, for continuation.
Police investigators allege that Sargeant was driving motor car PKK 6633 when it struck a bus driven by Bhojedat, a 33-year-old resident of Annandale, East Coast Demerara.
According to reports, the car was travelling behind the bus at a high speed and attempted to overtake it moments before the collision occurred.
The force of the crash caused the bus to veer off the roadway and crash into a light pole before rolling several times.
Bhojedat was thrown from the vehicle and found lying unconscious on the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
Sargeant sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where he received medical
attention.
Police stated that a breathalyzer test could not be conducted because injuries to his mouth required stitches.
The victim worked as a chemist at Demerara Distillers Limited and was also the President of the St Stanislaus College Association.
