Essequibo Police get new Divisional Headquarter, Outposts

The Ministry of Home Affairs opened a spanking new Divisional Headquarter for the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in Region Two along with two new police outposts. The facilities were opened by Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn during an official visit to the region at the weekend.

According to the Ministry, the Divisional Headquarter opened at Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast costs a total of $215.1M. The building was constructed by Builders Hardware and General Supplies and funded by the Government of Guyana.

With its modern exterior and interior design, the facility will house several departments and will include a domestic violence room, juvenile friendly holding area, child-friendly area, witness protection room, a case management room, a case management system, traffic department, and criminal investigation department.

The newly constructed station will also house the Anna Regina Immigration Service which will provide decentralized Immigration Services to residents of Regions One and Two.

Several members of the Business Community are also present at the event which saw the handing over of ten (10) new vehicles to the Police Force by Essequibo businessmen Tamesh and Suresh Jagmohan.

In addition, the two new Police Outposts were opened at Lima Sands costing $4.5M and Onderneeming Sand Pit, to provide better security to residents in those communities.

The openings were also attended by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Ms. Mae Toussaint Jr. Thomas, the Acting Commissioner of Police Mr. Clifton Hicken, Deputy Commissioner ‘Administration’ (ag) Mr. Calvin Brutus, Deputy Commissioner ‘Operations’ (ag) Mr. Ravindradat Budhram, Head of Special Branch Mr. Errol Watts, Commander of Regional Division #2 Superintendent Mr. Shivpersaud Bacchus, Head of the Corporate Communications Unit Mr. Mark Ramotar, and other senior and junior officers.

Meanwhile, the Ministry also opened a $60M Police Station at Parika, Region Three which was remodelled through the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Citizen Security Strengthening Programme (CSSP).

The modern facility is community-based and will give the citizens of the region a better opportunity to file reports, especially sensitive reports where the need for confidentiality is high, according to the Home Affairs Ministry.

The new station will house a domestic violence room, juvenile friendly holding area, child-friendly area, witness protection room, a case management room, a case management system, an integrated crime information system, an Immigration section and other offices.
