Two dead as mining pit collapses at Mahdia

June 13 2026
Two miners are dead after a mining pit collapsed at St. Elizabeth, Mahdia, Region Eight, earlier today in what has been described as a “freak accident”.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:55 p.m.

According to information from the location, the operation was fully licensed and reportedly had all the necessary approvals, safety measures and engineering systems in place.

Despite those precautions, a section of the pit is said to have caved in from a considerable distance away before collapsing into a marac hole where the workers were operating.
One of the deceased has been identified as “Frank”, a Guyanese national. The second victim is believed to be a Brazilian national, whose identity was not immediately available.
Persons familiar with the miner said efforts are being made to contact his wife in Brazil to confirm his identity.
A third worker, who was operating equipment in the area, narrowly escaped with his life.
Police and officials from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) are on the ground as recovery efforts continue. The bodies of the two men are believed to be trapped within the collapsed pit, and teams are working to retrieve them.
