A 61-year-old woman has died after a fire completely destroyed her home at No. 2 Settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Bibi Ramprashad, called “Zeena,” a physically challenged resident who used a wheelchair following complications from a diabetic foot condition.
According to Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald, the Guyana Fire Service received a report of the blaze around 5:05 a.m. Fire tenders from the Onverwagt Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the scene.
At the time of the incident, Ramprashad was alone at home. Her husband, 65-year-old Looknauth Ramprashad, known as “Prame,” was reportedly working in the backlands of the community when the fire broke out.
Fire officials are conducting an investigation to determine the origin and cause of the blaze.
