Police have detained the driver and impounded the vehicle involved in the fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of Kildonan Primary School Headteacher Sonia Williams.

Williams, 51, of Chesney Housing Scheme, Corentyne, was fatally injured around 3:21 p.m. Monday on the Rose Hall Town Public Road.

Police said Williams’ car, PAK 5566, was stationary on the southern side of the road when she reportedly attempted to open the right-side front door. A white motor car travelling west reportedly collided with Williams and the opened door.

Williams fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries. She was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she succumbed while receiving treatment.

Police subsequently identified the vehicle involved as PJJ 7624 and its driver as a resident of Hampshire, Corentyne. Both the driver and vehicle are currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.

Williams’ body is at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The Region Six education community continues to mourn her death, with colleagues remembering her for her years of dedicated service to education.

Investigations are ongoing.
