-Lusignan Resident Charged with Receiving Stolen Articles
Two East Coast Demerara men were on Wednesday sentenced to three months’ imprisonment after admitting to a charge of simple larceny, while a third man was separately charged for receiving stolen articles in connection with the same matter.
The convicted men have been identified as Eric Orlando Arnold, called “Ajay”, a 23-year-old construction worker of Phase 2, Good Hope, and Joshua Chowkai, called “Jay”, a 25-year-old taxi driver of Mon Repos.
Police said the duo was arrested on September 2, 2025, by ranks from the Beterverwagting Police Station. The following day, they were formally charged with Simple Larceny in relation to a theft committed against Balram Manickram.
When they appeared before Her Worship Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, both men pleaded guilty. A settlement agreement was presented in court, but they were nonetheless sentenced to three months in prison each.
Meanwhile, in a related case, Rahul Sewdial, a 27-year-old resident of Lusignan, was arrested on September 2 and charged the next day with Receiving Stolen Articles, contrary to Section 237 (I) of the Criminal Law Offences Act.
He appeared at Vigilance Magistrates’ Court #1 before His Worship Sunil Scarce, where the charge was read. Sewdial pleaded not guilty, but later compensated the victim in the sum of $450,000. The matter was subsequently dismissed.
