
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, accompanied by Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, Kwame McCoy, and Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Sonia Parag, engaged with residents and farmers of Mocha Village on the East Bank of Demerara yesterday, pledging significant improvements to the community’s drainage systems.
During the visit, Minister Mustapha committed to upgrading the drainage systems in both the residential and cultivation areas of Mocha.
He emphasized that the work will be carried out by local residents, fostering community involvement in the development process.
Additionally, Minister Mustapha announced that a 40-cusec pump will be installed in the area, fulfilling a commitment made by President Irfaan Ali.
The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) is currently collaborating with local farmers to clear internal drains. As part of the first phase of this program, 27 internal drains and beds have already been cleared and lifted.
To further support local agriculture, Minister Mustapha also assured farmers that they will receive planting materials to enhance their production efforts.
