A postmortem examination conducted on seven-year-old Adriel Afrab Mohamed has found that he died from an incised wound to the neck, with additional evidence of blunt force injuries.

Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh performed the examination on Monday and later released the child’s body to relatives for burial.

Police sources said the findings indicate that the fatal wounds were inflicted with a knife and not a cutlass, as has been falsely circulated on social media.

The Zeelugt Primary School pupil was brutally killed on Friday, June 5, after an intruder entered his home. During the attack, the child’s 72-year-old disabled grandmother Haliman Itwaru, was also stabbed while lying in her bed but survived. She remains hospitalised.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum has since confirmed that a 23-year-old man from the community confessed to the killing after investigators confronted him with digital and other evidence placing him at the scene.

According to Blanhum, “the suspect was confronted with compelling digital evidence which showed him at the crime scene at the material time.”

He further stated, “Being unable to deny his presence at the crime scene, the suspect confessed to investigators the gruesome details…”

Police said the suspect also admitted that the knife recovered from the scene belonged to him.

Investigators further revealed that before entering the victims’ home, the suspect had first entered a nearby yard but retreated after hearing movements inside. In his haste, he allegedly left behind a pair of slippers and a music player, both of which he later identified as his.

Detectives are also expected to submit the suspect’s clothing and other items of evidence for forensic examination.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect reported for work on the morning after the attack with a visible wound on his hand. Police said his employer confirmed that the injury was not present the previous day.
