Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and two other men were arrested after an alleged gunfire incident on Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown, late Monday night, during which an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were reportedly found in their vehicle.
According to a police statement, Mohamed, 39, of Houston, East Bank Demerara, was arrested alongside Mario Mohamed, 25, of Timehri, and Eugene Thorne, 35, a driver from the same community.
The incident reportedly occurred around 11:45 p.m. on October 12, 2026, near the residence of Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, Head of Special Branch.
The statement further said that preliminary information indicates that Narine was at home when he observed a black Toyota Allion, bearing registration number PXX 5300, travelling slowly along Barr Street. The vehicle reportedly passed his residence before returning a short while later.
As the car approached for a second time, Narine reportedly heard what sounded like a gunshot.
He took cover and discharged several rounds from his service firearm in the direction of the vehicle, which subsequently drove away.
The car was later intercepted at the junction of Vlissengen Road and Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, where the three occupants were taken into custody.
A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered a .32 Taurus pistol without a serial number and three live rounds of .32 ammunition. The men were arrested in connection with the alleged possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence.
Investigators also recovered one spent .32 shell on the southern side of Barr Street, opposite the residence, along with four spent 9mm shells.
The firearm, ammunition and spent shells have been lodged for ballistic examination, while CCTV footage from the area is expected to be reviewed.
The three men remain in custody as investigations continue. The circumstances surrounding the reported gunfire, including who discharged the weapon or weapons involved, remain under investigation.
