Man fatally shot during altercation at Beterverwagting supermarket

A 39-year-old La Bonne Intention man was shot dead on Saturday evening during an altercation at a supermarket along the Beterverwagting Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.

Dead is Kevon Benjamin, who was reportedly involved in an altercation with a 46-year-old security officer at about 5:45 p.m. on September 12, 2026.

During the confrontation, a firearm was allegedly discharged, striking Benjamin in the abdomen. He was rushed to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he received emergency treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.

The 46-year-old security officer was subsequently taken into police custody. Investigators recovered a 9mm Beretta firearm and a magazine containing 16 matching rounds of ammunition, which were lodged pending further investigation.

Benjamin’s body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The suspect remains in custody as police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
