Man shot by police at Schoonard Highway

A 27-year-old man is receiving medical treatment under police guard after he was shot during an incident at Schoonard Highway, West Bank Demerara, on Wednesday.

Police said the incident occurred between 1:45 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on August 19, 2026, after ranks attached to the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station responded to a report of a man walking along the highway with what appeared to be a firearm tucked into his waist.

Upon arrival, a police rank reportedly approached the man, who allegedly removed the object from his waist and pointed it in the direction of the rank.

The rank subsequently discharged one round, after which the man reportedly dropped the object and fled into a nearby trench and rice field.

He was later apprehended and found with what appeared to be a gunshot wound beneath his left armpit. He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he remains under medical care and police guard.

The object recovered at the scene was identified as what appeared to be a black Glock air gun and has been lodged as part of the investigation.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
