June 23 2026
A 52-year-old minibus driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following the fatal accident that claimed the life of a secondary school teacher along the Diamond Bypass Road, East Bank Demerara.
William Gomes of Lot 2164 Diamond Section C, Block X, East Bank Demerara, the driver of minibus BAH 4679, was charged under Section 35(1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, as amended by Act No. 16 of 1998.
Gomes appeared before Magistrate Wander Fortune at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where the indictable charge was read to him. He was not required to plead and was remanded to prison until July 7, 2026, for disclosure.
The charge stems from a June 16 accident along the Diamond Bypass Road that resulted in the death of Tineka Hicks, also known as “Precious,” a mother of two and teacher attached to Dolphin Secondary School.
Several persons, including children were also injured.
