A Sunday afternoon fire at Lot 21 Lumberyard Street, Vigilance North, East Coast Demerara, has displaced a 43-year old-woman, her partner and five children.

Speaking with BIG Smith News Watch Monday morning at the site of the fire, Abiola Robinson said she was in her saloon along the Brush Dam Road when someone called to inform her of the fire.

“I did not take if for anything but then he called back and say Abby your F*%cking house is on fire” the now displaced woman recalled.

According to her, when she looked u she saw the thick black smoke in the air and raced home. There she saw villagers rushing as they tried to form bucket brigades to control the fire from spreading to two other nearby buildings in the yard. The Guyana Fire Service arrived within 10 mins of the call and brought the fire under control. Robinson confirmed that prior to the fire, there was no power outage in the area.

Keshia Gentle who was at home at the time of the fire, said she heard a ‘Pax Pax’ and when he looked up, she saw the windows and other items falling down.

She said she quickly attempted to get her brother in law who is an amputee, out of the home but could not. It was with the help of other that he was able to be removed from the burning home.

Household appliances, clothing and documents were destroyed in the fire
