Govt seeks safer online spaces for children

June 24 2026
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall says the government’s ongoing consultations on social media regulation are primarily intended to better protect children from harmful online content and enhance their safety in the digital space.
Speaking during his weekly ‘Issues in the News’ programme, Nandlall dismissed suggestions that the initiative is designed to censor Facebook or restrict freedom of expression.
He noted that governments worldwide regulate aspects of social media use and said Guyana is seeking to establish a formal working relationship with platforms such as Facebook.
He added that the Guyana Police Force has previously engaged social media companies in legal matters, including the service of court orders.
The Attorney General stressed that the consultations are not politically motivated and are not aimed at controlling online discussions.
Instead, he said, the focus is on safeguarding children and promoting their welfare while ensuring that freedom of expression and the responsible use of social media platforms are preserved.
The consultations form part of broader efforts by the government to explore measures that encourage safer online spaces for young users.
