Wet road, failed overtaking attempt led to fatal Diamond crash- Police

June 16 2026
Investigators believe a combination of heavy rainfall, a wet roadway and a failed overtaking manoeuvre contributed to the fatal minibus accident on the Diamond New Interlink Road, East Bank Demerara, on Tuesday morning.
The crash claimed the life of 30-year-old teacher Tineka Hicks of Great Diamond and left six other occupants injured.
According to a police report, the minibus was travelling north along the roadway at around 8:30 a.m. when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle. During the manoeuvre, he allegedly lost control of the vehicle on the rain-soaked road.
The minibus subsequently toppled onto its side, skidded off the roadway and came to rest in a nearby drain.
Hicks became trapped inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The remaining passengers, including three students, were taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where they received treatment for injuries before being discharged.
Police said breathalyzer tests conducted on the driver found no trace of alcohol in his system.
Investigations into the fatal crash are continuing.
