National triumph fuels Khalil’s pursuit of excellence

Winning the 2026 Women’s National Squash Championship has only strengthened Ashley Khalil’s determination to become an even better player as she sets her sights on future regional and international competitions.

Fresh off her victory at the National Racquet Centre on Sunday, Khalil said the achievement serves as motivation rather than a finishing point.

“Winning a national title always serves as motivation to keep learning, growing and striving to perform better,” she said.

The seasoned squash standout revealed that her ambitions extend well beyond the local scene, “my focus remains on continuing to improve in the sport and represent Guyana to the best of my ability.

Regional and international competitions are ahead, and I’m looking forward to participating in those opportunities.”

To prepare for those challenges, Khalil plans to focus on several key areas of her game, “I am looking forward to continued work on my fitness, on court movement and keeping things consistent, while finding ways to evolve my game.”

Nevertheless, her latest national success came despite a less-than-ideal build-up to the championships, “preparation for the championships was a little different this year due to personal commitments requiring me to adjust my training schedule,” she noted.

Further, Khalil maintained the discipline necessary to remain at the top of her game, “this time, I wasn’t able to spend as much time as I would have preferred on court, but my focus on staying consistent with my fitness routine and daily activity kept me in the game.”

That commitment ultimately paid dividends as she once again emerged as national champion; reflecting on the accomplishment, Khalil expressed appreciation for the many individuals who have supported her journey.

“I’m incredibly grateful to have won the 2026 national title. For me, every championship follows unique hurdles that makes the win special. This title reminds me how grateful I am for my community of constant support, my family, coaches, physios, training partners and everyone who gives words of encouragement along the way.

“I’m very proud of the result but still mindful that there is more work to be done ahead,” she concluded.

With another national title secured, Guyana’s squash stalwart is already focused on the next challenge, eager to continue raising her standards while proudly carrying the Golden Arrowhead on the international stage.

Last month, Khalil’s multi – sport prowess was also demonstrated when she captured the title at Guyana’s 60th Independence Daimond Jubilee Badminton Open.
