Bartica residents to benefit from 25% less electricity costs

Residents of Bartica are set to receive a 25 per cent reduction in their electricity bills following the commissioning of a new solar power facility aimed at lowering energy costs and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The announcement was made by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali during a community engagement in Bartica on Monday, where he outlined the benefits already being realised from the town’s 1.5-megawatt solar photovoltaic farm.

The project, which was completed at a cost of more than $703 million, is now supplying electricity to the township and has significantly reduced the amount of diesel required for power generation.

According to the President, the solar facility is expected to save approximately 6,148 drums of diesel annually while preventing around 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere.

He said the reduction in electricity rates forms part of the government’s wider plan to cut energy costs across Guyana through investments in renewable energy and modern power infrastructure.

President Ali also noted that similar initiatives are being explored in hinterland communities, where assessments are underway to expand off-grid renewable energy systems and improve access to reliable electricity for households.

The government expects the lower electricity costs to provide financial relief for residents and businesses while supporting economic development in Bartica and other communities transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
