Citizens urged to report public transport violations

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is calling on commuters to play a more active role in improving the country’s public transportation system by reporting misconduct and violations committed by operators.
The appeal was made during the GPF’s weekly television programme, *Road Safety and You*, where officials addressed ongoing concerns within the public transport sector, including unauthorised fare increases, speeding, inappropriate behaviour by operators and discriminatory practices against passengers.
Police Sergeant Anjan Bandran stressed that reports from the public are vital in helping authorities identify offenders and take corrective action.
He noted that law enforcement officers are unable to witness every incident on the nation’s roadways and therefore rely heavily on information provided by commuters.
According to Sergeant Bandran, evidence such as videos, photographs and other supporting material can significantly assist investigations and strengthen cases against operators who breach traffic laws and transportation regulations.
Also speaking on the programme was President of the United Minibus Association (UMA), Eon Andrews, who highlighted the importance of adhering to the Code of Conduct governing public transportation services.
Andrews explained that the code was developed through collaboration among key stakeholders and outlines standards of behaviour for minibus operators, hire car drivers and conductors in their interactions with passengers.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to promote safer, more professional and commuter-friendly public transportation services across Guyana.
