18 years in jail for man who murdered fellow villager

Phillip Jhagroo, who was found guilty last month by a mixed 12-member jury of the May 2019 murder of Leguan resident Mark Narine, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison by Justice Brassington Reynolds.

Jhagroo, 50, called ‘Tanky’ formerly of Goed Intent, Leguan, Region Three, had been on trial for the capital offence at the High Court in Essequibo over the death of Narine, aka ‘Marko’.

He was convicted of murdering the man between March 30 and 31, 2019, at School Dam, Richmond Hill, Leguan. From the 18-year prison sentence, a deduction of three years– the period of time the killer spent in custody awaiting trial– has to be made.

The murder convict was represented by Attorney-at-Law Latchmie Rahamat, while Senior State Counsel Tiffini Lyken was on record for the prosecution.

Police had reported that Narine, 22, was on his way home on March 30, 2019, when he was hit off his motorcycle by Jhagroo and thrown overboard. The young man was discovered motionless the following day in a nearby trench.

A post-mortem examination revealed that he died as a result of drowning. It also showed signs of blunt trauma to his face and hands which are consistent with being severely beaten.
