Mental health takes center stage in May

As Mental Health Awareness Month is observed this May, global and local stakeholders are renewing calls to prioritize mental well-being and dismantle the stigma surrounding mental illness.

The observance serves as a critical reminder that mental health is just as essential as physical health, influencing how individuals think, feel, and interact with the world around them.

According to the World Health Organization, one in every eight people worldwide lives with a mental disorder, with conditions such as anxiety and depression among the most common.

Experts stress that early intervention, access to support services, and open conversations can significantly improve outcomes for those affected.

In Guyana and across the Caribbean, health professionals and advocacy groups are using the month to host educational campaigns, community outreach programmes, and workplace initiatives aimed at promoting awareness and encouraging individuals to seek help without fear of judgment.

Increasingly, there is also a push to integrate mental health services into primary healthcare systems to ensure wider accessibility.

Mental health advocates emphasize that societal attitudes must evolve, urging communities to foster empathy and understanding.

They note that simple actions checking in on loved ones, promoting work-life balance, and seeking professional help when needed can collectively create a more supportive environment.

As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, the message remains clear: addressing mental health is a shared responsibility, and meaningful progress begins with awareness, compassion, and action.
