The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) celebrated its 60th anniversary with a solemn and proud Medal Presentation Parade at Base Camp Ayangana today.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, decorated officers and other ranks with military medals recognizing distinguished, faithful, and exemplary service to the nation.
A total of 871 special medals were approved for presentation, with 32 conferred at the parade. The remaining recipients are expected to receive their awards at a later date.
The ceremony honoured GDF personnel for their dedication across various roles. Awards included the Military Efficiency Medal for officers and ranks completing 10 years of continuous service without disciplinary issues and the Border Defence Medal, recognising those who protect Guyana’s frontiers with patience and perseverance.
The head of state underscored that the medals symbolise the nation’s trust and resilience and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising the GDF through investments in technology, training, and personnel wellbeing.
President Ali also introduced five new medals under his authority to recognise excellence in diverse operations. These include awards for Search and Rescue, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response, Engineering and Border Operations, Special Operations, and Joint Services Operations—highlighting the GDF’s contributions beyond traditional combat roles.
