Berbice Man Sentenced to 13 Years for Beating “Eggy” to Death

November 19 2025
The sentence was handed down by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Berbice High Court after a jury found Shane Samaroo, also known as Travis Cortis, guilty of the offence.

Dead: Faroze Khan
The incident occurred on August 19, 2021, when Khan of Carriage Road, Rosignol, was passing a grocery shop at Bennet Dam, Rosignol.
Without warning, Samaroo attacked him with a piece of wood, striking him repeatedly.
After 48-year-old Khan collapsed, Samaroo escalated the assault by stabbing him. A post-mortem examination later confirmed that Khan died from a stab wound that pierced his heart.
Police launched a manhunt and issued a wanted bulletin for Samaroo four days after the killing. He evaded arrest for several months before being captured in Black Bush Polder.
Officers also detained his mother, accusing her of helping him hide while on the run.
During sentencing, defence attorney Kevin Edmondson made submissions on his client’s behalf.
Justice Kissoon, while imposing the 13-year term, recommended that Samaroo participate in anger management and alcohol rehabilitation programmes during his incarceration.
The judge noted that this is designed to assist his rehabilitation as he prepares for re-entry into society.
