October 7 2025
Police in Region Seven are investigating the discovery of a man’s body at Quartz Stone Backdam, Cuyuni River, (Monday, October 6, 2025). The deceased has since been identified as 35-year-old Yosber Alberto Rivero Sojo, a Venezuelan national and gold miner.
According to reports, a security guard employed by a Russian-owned company in the area contacted the Bartica Police Station around 11:30 hours to report the incident. The guard told investigators that at approximately 10:00 hours, a woman known only as “Uma” visited the company’s compound and informed him that a Venezuelan man was lying dead on the roadway.
She further claimed that the man had been beaten by a group of fellow Venezuelan nationals. The security guard said he went to the location, where he observed the man’s motionless body partially covered with a multi-coloured hammock, his face exposed. He took photographs of the scene before returning to his camp and contacting the police.
Detectives from the Bartica Police Station subsequently visited the area and confirmed the discovery. Preliminary investigations revealed that Rivero Sojo had reportedly been confronted by about 12 men, all said to be Venezuelan nationals, who accused him of theft before violently assaulting him.
The body was later transported to Bartica, where it is currently awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects, and investigations are ongoing.
