Nine killed in Tumbler Ridge school and home shooting

A devastating mass shooting in the remote British Columbia town of Tumbler Ridge, Canada, has left at least nine people dead and dozens injured, authorities confirmed, in one of the deadliest episodes of gun violence in the country in recent years.
On Tuesday afternoon, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, a combined middle and high school serving around 175 students in the mountain community roughly 1,100 kilometres northeast of Vancouver.
Officers found six people shot dead inside the school; a seventh person, also wounded there, died while being transported to a hospital. Police later identified a secondary location, where two additional victims were found dead at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the attack.
The suspected shooter, described in early reports as a female in a dress, was found deceased at the school from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound; police say there is no indication of additional suspects or an ongoing threat.

At least 27 others were injured, including two airlifted with serious or life-threatening wounds and approximately 25 others with non-life-threatening injuries, the RCMP said.
Canadian public officials expressed shock and sorrow following the tragedy. Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by the shootings and announced he was suspending planned travel to Europe in light of the incident. British Columbia Premier David Eby called the attack an “unimaginable tragedy” for the close-knit community.
Local authorities issued an active shooter alert to residents, telling them to shelter in place while the RCMP conducted a thorough search of the school and surrounding properties; the alert was later cancelled once police declared there was no further danger.
Tumbler Ridge, with a population of roughly 2,700, is reeling from the violence. Community leaders and first responders are working to support survivors and families of the victims, and counseling services have been mobilized for students, staff and residents traumatized by the shootings.
Investigators have not yet publicly disclosed a motive or the identities of those killed and injured as the probe continues. School officials have announced that the facility will remain closed for the rest of the week while authorities and counselors support the community’s recovery.
