The National Education Leadership Academy was officially launched today, marking a significant step toward strengthening the leadership capacity of teachers across Guyana’s education system.

IDB Country Representative Lorena Solórzano-Salazar noted that the programme provides an opportunity for teachers to apply newly acquired knowledge and leadership skills to improve educational outcomes nationwide. She emphasized the importance of building strong leadership ecosystems to ensure that students in every region have equal opportunities to learn and succeed.

Upon completion of the programme, participants will receive certification and are expected to emerge with the skills needed to lead effectively both within the classroom and beyond.

The Academy is designed to equip teachers with enhanced leadership, mentoring and conflict-management skills, particularly in response to growing concerns about bullying and student wellbeing in schools. Through targeted training, educators are expected to become better prepared to address these challenges confidently and effectively.

Speaking at the launch held at the Pegasus Hotel, Minister of Education Sonia Parag said the Academy aligns with the Ministry’s broader strategic plan aimed at promoting equitable access to quality education and lifelong learning. She noted that as Guyana continues to develop rapidly, strong leadership within schools is essential to translating national goals into meaningful teaching and learning outcomes.

The first cohort of the Academy comprises 100 teachers from various roles within the education system. Participants will undergo structured training over an 18-month period through a combination of online and in-person sessions, with an emphasis on practical, community-based application.

Minister Parag also highlighted that the Academy seeks to empower educators to better support students, particularly those affected by regional disparities, gender inequality, and special education needs and disabilities.

The initiative is being implemented through a strategic partnership with UNESCO, which is providing technical support, along with financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and a US$5 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education.
