61-Y-O Vendor Charged with Larceny, Granted Bail

December 1 2025
A 61-year-old clothes vendor, Nigel Whyte, appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, facing a charge of larceny.
Whyte pleaded not guilty to the allegation.
The charge alleges that on Tuesday, 28th October 2025, at Water Street, Georgetown, Whyte stole a Samsung smartphone valued at $55,000 belonging to Noel Bassant.
Whyte’s attorney told the court that her client, a long-time clothes vendor, has one prior conviction from 14 years ago but has had no further legal issues since.
She emphasized that Whyte has no pending matters in any other court and requested that reasonable bail be granted.
The prosecutor raised no objection to bail but noted that the stolen phone had not been recovered. CCTV footage reportedly showed Whyte removing the phone from the complainant’s bag.
Whyte denied any knowledge of taking the phone.
Magistrate Singh granted bail in the amount of $40,000 and adjourned the matter to December 5 for further proceedings.
