Policeman on Trial for Murder of Quindon Bacchus

October 26 2025
The murder trial of Police Lance Corporal Kristoff De Nobrega, who is accused of killing 23-year-old Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) youth Quindon Bacchus, is currently ongoing before Justice Gino Persaud.
The case is being heard by a 12-member jury at the High Court in Demerara.
De Nobrega, 24, is on trial for the capital offence of murder and is being represented by Attorney-at-Law George Thomas. State Counsel Praneeta Seeraj and State Counsel Padma Dubraj are leading the case for the prosecution.
After the conclusion of the preliminary inquiry in April 2024, a magistrate found that a prima facie case had been made out against the police officer and committed him to stand trial.
The trial is scheduled to continue on Monday.
De Nobrega remains on remand as the case continues.
According to the Guyana Police Force, at around 14:30 hours on June 10, 2022, ranks conducted an operation at Haslington New Scheme, ECD, based on intelligence received earlier that day.
Police said the operation followed information from a 22-year-old construction worker, who later led them to Bacchus. At the time, Bacchus was reportedly in possession of a firearm and intended to sell it to an undercover rank.
The plainclothes officer, who was armed, reportedly arranged to purchase the weapon from Bacchus, who left and later returned with the gun.
However, during the exchange, an alarm was raised, and Bacchus allegedly fled in a southern direction while discharging a round at the officer. The rank responded by drawing his service pistol and returning fire.
Police reported that Bacchus was struck during the exchange of gunfire. A .380 pistol with a magazine containing one round, along with one .380 spent shell and two 9mm spent shells, were recovered at the scene.
Bacchus was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
