Police Connect Suspect and Weapon to Killing of 68-Y-O ‘Smokey’

Police in Regional Division Six have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the death of 68-year-old Cledwin Gordon, known as “Smokey”, a labourer of DeVeldt, Berbice River. The incident occurred on Friday, October 10, 2025.
According to reports, police ranks visited DeVeldt Village around 12:39 hrs on Saturday, October 11, following information that Gordon had gone missing after being involved in an altercation with another villager.
During their visit, investigators interviewed several residents and subsequently recovered a cutlass believed to have been used during the confrontation. A 49-year-old labourer from the same village was arrested in connection with the incident, and the weapon was lodged as evidence.
The following morning, Sunday, October 12, around 06:00 hrs, Gordon’s body was discovered floating in the Berbice River near DeVeldt Village. His remains were retrieved and examined by investigators before being transported to the Bath Settlement Regional Hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead. The body was later taken to Bailey’s Funeral Home pending a post-mortem examination.
Police confirmed that the suspect was interviewed on Monday, October 13, and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
