Motorcyclist Dies After Collision with Cow in New Amsterdam

Police in New Amsterdam are investigating a fatal road incident that claimed the life of a 25-year-old motorcyclist, Jamal Hughes, of Glasgow Village, East Berbice. The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, June 23, 2025, along the Stanleytown Public Road.
According to police reports, Hughes was operating motorcycle #CP 2700 with 24-year-old Marashia Dehart of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, as the pillion rider. The two were heading south on the roadway when the motorcycle collided with a cow crossing from east to west.
Preliminary investigations suggest the motorcycle was being ridden at a high speed when the crash occurred. Both Hughes and Dehart were flung onto the roadway and sustained injuries.
They were quickly assisted by public-spirited citizens and transported to the New Amsterdam Hospital. Hughes was examined and treated for injuries to his head and body, but he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 1:55 a.m. the following day.
Dehart was treated for minor injuries and later discharged from the hospital.
The body of the deceased is currently at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
