The President’s comments were made while speaking at an event recently where the Guyana Police Force honoured police ranks and officers who have studied and qualified themselves academically.

Over the past few weeks, there has been a mud-slinging contest within the Guyana Police Force where persons within the organization and with access to records and files, were causing them to be leaked into the public’s domain.

Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn who has supervisory oversight of the Guyana Police Force, used his presence at the Force’s Anniversary Symposim to suggest that police officers who wear gold jewelry are corrupt and can be bought. That statement did not go down well for the minister who was chastised in many professional circles for what was considered a reckless statement.

In a statement later that evening, President Irfaan Ali said he has no issues with police officers wearing their gold jewelry once it is within their uniform code. He reiterated that Joint Services members are hard-working committed individuals.
