Hadfield Street Men Remanded on Cocaine Trafficking Charge

Two men of Hadfield Street, Georgetown, were remanded to prison on Wednesday after being accused of having more than one kilogramme of cocaine in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Clarence Jones, 69, and Carlos Garraway, 53, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where both pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the allegation, on September 15, the men were found at Lot 42, Hadfield Street, with 1.172 kilogrammes of cocaine.

A prosecutor representing the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) told the court that, acting on intelligence, officers visited the defendants’ residence.

There, a search was conducted in their presence. A gift bag discovered in the living room reportedly contained a black plastic bag holding a brick-like parcel with a powdery substance.

Preliminary field tests confirmed the substance was cocaine, the court heard. The men were cautioned, arrested, and escorted to CANU headquarters, where the suspected narcotics were weighed.

Samples were taken, sealed, and lodged as part of the investigation.

The prosecutor strongly objected to bail, arguing that no special reasons existed in favour of the defendants and noting that both men live at the location where the drugs were found.

Jones, in his defence, told the magistrate that CANU operatives had framed him, claiming the bag was planted inside his home.

Magistrate Azore nevertheless denied bail and adjourned the matter to October 8.
