June 2025

The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in collaboration with the Guyana Prison Service, the Amethyst School of Martial Arts, and the Security Training Academy, officially launched a three-day Taser Certification Course on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The programme is being held at the Officers’ Training Centre.

The training, which includes certification in Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) operations, the TX200P model, and Body-Worn Camera (BWC) systems, is aimed at enhancing officers’ readiness and equipping them with modern, non-lethal policing tools—especially in preparation for the upcoming General and Regional Elections.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Deputy Superintendent London, followed by an address from Assistant Director of Prisons, Mr. Pilgrim. He emphasized the importance of the training, noting that it goes beyond routine instruction and qualifies officers in legally compliant CEW operation.

Highlighting the course’s relevance to election preparedness, Mr. Pilgrim reminded participants that tasers are to be used strictly on non-compliant individuals and in accordance with use-of-force guidelines.

Deputy Commissioner and Commander of 4A Division, Mr. McBean, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a milestone for the GPF in adopting less-lethal policing strategies. He encouraged officers to fully engage with the training and assured that successful participants will receive official certification.

Also speaking at the event, Colonel Souvenir, Chairman of the Joint Services Training Committee, underscored the importance of evolving law enforcement practices and embracing change to improve public safety outcomes.

The Taser Certification Course reflects the GPF’s commitment to professionalism, modern policing, and the responsible application of force in maintaining law and order.
