Children Removed as City Hall Shuts Down Daycare Run by Cubans

November 26 2025
16 children were removed from an unlicensed daycare facility operated by a Cuban national on Robb Street, between Camp and Alexander Streets in Georgetown.
The operation was conducted jointly by the Mayor and City Council’s Public Health Department and the Childcare & Protection Agency (CPA)—the second such incident in two weeks.

Of the 16 children registered to the daycare—belonging primarily to fellow Cuban nationals—11 were present at the time of the visit. Three of the children were of school age.

According to reports, the daycare was operating without authorization and in unsafe conditions.

The caregiver was not certified and is not naturalized as a Guyanese citizen. Inspectors also cited overcrowding, poor environmental hygiene, and the absence of basic sanitary provisions, including potties.

All the children and the caregiver were taken to the CPA’s Broad Street facility, where they were safeguarded until their parents were contacted.

Parents arrived to uplift their children after interviews with the authorities. They were subsequently referred to properly registered daycare facilities near their workplaces.
The school-aged children were referred to the Ministry of Education for appropriate placement and support.
This is the second such incident involving unlicensed daycare operations within the last two weeks.
Attempts to obtain a comment from the Childcare Department proved futile.
