Ali returns to work as President-elect

September 03, 2025

Having secured re-election to office as president of Guyana and with his party securing the majority of votes to control the National Assembly, President-elect Mohamed Irfaan Ali showed up at the Office of the President, where he was greeted with piles of correspondence which has accumulated over the last few days.

In a photograph released by his Official Facebook Page, stacked correspondence, including from the Caribbean Community Secretariat, could be seen on his desk as he tends to them.

Ali’s party, the People’s Progressive Party Civic, contested the elections in all ten voting districts; it lost ground in some areas but gained in others. Its electoral base, according to numbers released by the Guyana Elections Commission, appeared to have suffered little damage even as it gained support in some non-traditional areas.

His first term was populated with a widespread infrastructure development agenda and claims and allegations of corruption, nepotism. Many are of the view that with the return of the Ali to presidency, the country may see major changes which would include new faces in his cabinet, occupancy of Parliamentary seats, heads of state agencies and their boards, among others.

On the campaign trail, Ali and his candidates promised a continuation of the developmental agenda as Guyana eyes more revenue for the oil and gas industry.

It was also during the campaigning that several issues were exposed with respect to lethargic regional representatives whose actions caused concerns about Ali’s smooth sailing into re-election.

The People’s Progressive Party Civic has finally achieved its decades-old wish of winning the electoral votes in Region 4. A base that has never shifted from the People’s National Congress Reform.

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and We Invest In Nationhood (WIN) have both requested recounts for votes within the Region 4 district. APNU’s request was granted by the Guyana Elections Commission, while no official work has been released on whether the request by WIN will be granted.
