Mechanic Remanded on Drug Trafficking Charge

A Charlestown, Georgetown mechanic was on Friday remanded to prison after being charged with possession of narcotics.

The accused, Charles Rawlins, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The charge alleges that on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Water Street, Stabroek Market, Georgetown, Rawlins had in his possession 98.4 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Rawlins’ defense attorney, Clevaun Humphrey, told the court that his client is a mechanic and a part-time vendor at the market.

Humphrey admitted that his client was previously charged with robbery but assured the court that those charges were unrelated to the current matter.

He further argued that Rawlins is not a flight risk and that the narcotics were not found directly in his possession but rather in a bag that did not belong to him.

Humphrey also noted that the market was crowded at the time, emphasizing the need to consider the issue of multiple occupancy.

He added that his client did not admit to having possession of the drugs and requested reasonable bail.

However, the prosecutor objected to bail, stating that when approached by ranks, Rawlins allegedly showed them a small parcel containing the narcotics and asked, “Y’all gon fight me down for this little thing?”

The prosecutor informed the court that the entire arrest was captured on video.

Magistrate McGusty denied bail and adjourned the matter to August 22.
