June 23 2025

A 33-year-old Sophia resident, Rafael Hintzel, was on Monday formally charged with three counts of armed robbery following his arrest by police on June 20, 2025.

Hintzel, of Lot 135 Red Road, Sophia, appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court where the charges, filed under Section 222(c) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01, were read to him. He pleaded not guilty to all three counts.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on November 4, 2024, along the Ann’s Grove main access road on the East Coast of Demerara. The alleged victims are:

Dexroy Singh, also known as ‘Bow,’ a 30-year-old barber of Ann’s Grove

Kishon Pompey, called ‘Breeze,’ a 25-year-old construction worker from the same village

Lawrence Pellew, known as ‘Delwin,’ a 20-year-old construction worker from Dutch Four Housing Scheme

Hintzel was accused of robbing the three men at gunpoint.

Despite the serious nature of the charges, the court granted him bail in the sum of $350,000. The case has been adjourned to August 6, 2025, for report and disclosure of statements.
