— Body Still Missing
Authorities are investigating the suspected drowning of 21-year-old Nazim Hamid, a mechanic from Brighton Village, West Bank Berbice, who reportedly disappeared beneath the waters of the Upper Demerara River on Sunday afternoon.
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 16:00 hrs on June 15, 2025, at the Coomacka Mines Beach, a popular recreational area in the Upper Demerara region.
Initial investigations revealed that Hamid had travelled to Linden the day before to visit a 16-year-old female student from the Wisroc Housing Scheme, with whom he is reportedly in a relationship. On Sunday afternoon, the pair joined friends for a swim at the river.
The teen told investigators that Hamid swam toward the centre of the river but began struggling and subsequently sank below the surface. Despite her cries for help and efforts by nearby residents to locate him, Hamid’s body has not yet been recovered.
Police responded promptly to the report, and a search operation was launched with assistance from members of the public. However, as of Monday morning, the body remains missing.
The investigation is ongoing.
