Major Housing and Water Infrastructure Projects Outlined for Campbelltown and Mahdia

June 13, 2025 — Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, met with residents of Campbelltown on Thursday to highlight key advancements in housing and water infrastructure across the Region Eight communities of Campbelltown and Mahdia.

During the meeting, the Minister detailed the government’s ongoing efforts to expand housing opportunities in the hinterland, emphasizing the development currently underway at 4 Miles, Mahdia. The new housing scheme is expected to deliver over 300 residential units upon completion, marking a significant step in extending homeownership to underserved areas.

The Minister also addressed persistent issues related to water access and quality. Plans are in motion for the drilling of a new well near the solar farm, which will supply potable water to communities including Co-op Farm, Damju Hill, and Pamela. This initiative includes the installation of an in-line filtration system to address the region’s high iron content in water. A schedule for sectional water delivery will also be introduced to ensure consistent access for all residents.

Parallel to these efforts, extensive works are being executed in Mahdia. Fabra Contracting is spearheading the drilling of a well at the solar farm, which will serve both new and existing households and link with the Campbelltown Phase 2 Co-op farm. The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is also advancing three in-house network extensions across Pamela Road in Campbelltown, Danju Hill, and the Solar Farm area. These networks will connect directly to the new well once operational, enhancing supply reliability.

Additional wells are also being developed in Campbelltown and central Mahdia to boost production capacity and improve overall water quality in the region. All infrastructural projects are scheduled for completion by the end of June.

The community engagement was supported by several key officials, including Regional Executive Officer Peter Ramotar, Deputy Mayor of Mahdia Akita John, Toshao of Campbelltown Earl Gildharie, GWI Senior Engineer Khemraj Persaud, and Orlando Shuman from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
