Venezuelan National is GTI’s 2024 Valedictorian

-As Institute Celebrates 73rd Graduation Ceremony

December 9 2024 – The Government Technical Institute (GTI) recently marked its 73rd Graduation and Prize-Giving Ceremony, celebrating its enduring legacy of empowering youth through technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

The event, held at the National Cultural Centre, spotlighted the institute’s unwavering commitment to nurturing skilled professionals equipped to drive personal growth and national development.

Outstanding Achievements

This year’s valedictorian, Ms. Maria Salloum, a Venezuelan national, earned distinctions in the Technician Diploma in Building and Civil Engineering and received the prestigious Principal’s Award.

GTI also celebrated the success of its CBET programmes. For the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic years, 500 students were deemed competent and will receive Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) certifications at Levels One or Two.

In total, 786 graduates were recognized in 2024, marking a year of significant achievements for GTI and its students.

Graduation Highlights for 2024

This year’s graduation celebrated the achievements of 420 candidates who wrote the Guyana Technical Education Examination (GTEE) in 2024. Key statistics include:

286 graduates successfully completed their programmes.
94 students were referred in one or two subjects (22% referral rate).
40 students failed three or more subjects (10% failure rate).

GTI achieved an overall pass rate of 68%, a notable recovery following challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Business Department excelled with an 87% pass rate, earning the title of Most Outstanding Department for 2024. The Science Department received the Most Improved Department accolade, with its pass rate rising from 39% in 2023 to 74% in 2024.

A statement issued by the institute posited that GTI continues to provide quality training supported by modern facilities, qualified educators, and strong partnerships with industry stakeholders. As the institute moves forward, its mission remains steadfast: unlocking potential and fueling progress for a brighter future.

The Board of Governors, Administration, and Staff extend their heartfelt congratulations to all 2024 graduates for their outstanding accomplishments.

Founded in May 1951, GTI began operations at the Queen’s College compound before relocating to Woolford Avenue in July of the same year. Over the decades, it has evolved to offer Diploma-level, Technician-level, and Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) programmes, with certifications recognized locally and regionally.

GTI has consistently adapted its offerings to meet industry demands. Today, it operates as a bridge between education and commerce, ensuring students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to excel in Guyana’s growing economy.
