Several files from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Chambers are being moved to safety following a fire at the Eve Leary, Kingston, Georgetown building in which the office is housed. The fire started just before 15:00h on Saturday. From all indications, the fire started in a section of the building occupied by ranks of the Guyana Police Force.

The DPP office is vested with the power and responsibility of exercising control over the prosecution of all criminal matters except the institution of court-martial.

The complex which was partly destroyed by fire also houses the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) and the barracks for some officers who work at the police headquarters.
Those officers have now been displaced.

All hands are on deck to ensure that alternative measures are put in place to continue the smooth functioning of the law enforcement offices. Several Ministers including Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand and Attorney General Anil Nandlall along with Senior Superintendent Calvin Brutus, Deputy Commissioner ‘Operations’ Clifton Hicken among others.

Saturday’s fire came just over a month since the Brickdam Police Station was completely destroyed by fire.
