15-Y-O wins Region 8 Police Youth Spelling Bee Competition

The Guyana Police Force on Friday, September 30, 2022, completed its Police Youth Spelling Bee Competition in Region Eight with Angelica Cornett, a 15-year-old student of Mahdia Secondary School copping first place.

In what can be described as a close finish, the competition which was held at the Mahdia Secondary School Auditorium saw 2nd place going to Chenapou Youth Group which was represented by Mary D’Andre and 3rd place to Karisparu Youth Group represented by Verna Alfred.

The competition which began with sixteen youths saw four rounds before the final round with the top three. The final round was tied with all three contestants sharing 50 points each. This would have prompted the judges to select an additional 6 words after all of the 147 words of the competition were exhausted. Those 6 words were not given to the participants on the list they were revising from.

At the end of the final round 2 contestants were tied with 10 points each during which a tie breaker word was used which determined the winner.

Delivering brief remarks was Commander Region 8, Senior Superintendent Michael Kingston encouraged the participants to attend school regularly noting that education adding that education is the most important key in unlocking prosperity.

Mr. Kingston also assured the participants along with other youths present that the Regional Police Administration of Region 8 and the Guyana Police Force as a whole will support them in their upbringing and in education-related aspect among other areas such as sports.

Also in attendance were Deputy Commander Region 8, Deputy Superintendent Javon Hamer; Town Clerk of Mahdia Township, Ms. Molica Adams; District Education Officer, Ms. Kim Douglas; Headmistress of Mahdia Secondary School, Ms. Jourdain; Headmistress of Mahdia Primary School, Ms.Tiffani Hinds; Commanding Officer GDF Region 8, Lieutenant Tobin; Divisional Detective Inspector, Inspector Krishna Seetaram; Head of Immigration Services Region 8, Sergeant Michael Sealey; Community Relations Officer and Subordinate Officer-in-Charge of Regional Police Divisional Headquarters # 8, Sergeant Asif Hakim and Subordinate Officer-in-Charge Mahdia Police Station, Sergeant Michael Clarke along with other invitees, students and ranks of the Division.
